The kitchen is the heart of every Sri Lankan home. It is where meals are prepared, where family gathers, and where the day starts with a cup of tea. Because you use the kitchen every single day, getting the design right matters more than any other room in your house.
A well-designed kitchen also adds real value to your home. If you ever decide to sell, buyers always look at the kitchen first. A modern, clean kitchen can increase your property value by 10-15%. So the money you spend on a good kitchen design is never wasted.
In this guide, we share practical kitchen design ideas that work well for homes in Sri Lanka -- whether you are building new or doing a kitchen renovation in Matale, Kandy, Gampola, or Akurana.
Choosing the Right Kitchen Layout
The layout is the most important decision you will make for your kitchen. It decides how easy or hard it is to cook, clean, and move around. Here are the three most popular kitchen layouts for Sri Lankan homes:
L-Shaped Kitchen
This is the most common layout in Sri Lanka. The cabinets and countertop run along two walls that meet at a corner, forming an "L" shape. It gives you good counter space and works well in both small and medium kitchens. If your kitchen is 8x10 feet or bigger, an L-shaped layout is a great choice. It also keeps one side of the kitchen open, so you have room to move.
U-Shaped Kitchen
The U-shaped layout has cabinets and countertops on three walls. This gives you the most storage and counter space. It works best in larger kitchens -- at least 10x10 feet. The downside is that it can feel closed in if the kitchen is too small. But if you have the space, this is the best layout for serious cooking because everything is within arm's reach.
Parallel (Galley) Kitchen
In a parallel kitchen, cabinets run along two opposite walls with a walkway in the middle. This is a smart layout for narrow or small kitchens. It is very efficient because you can turn from one side to the other easily. You need at least 4 feet of space between the two sides so two people can work without bumping into each other.
Kitchen Cabinets -- Wooden vs Aluminium
Cabinets take up the most visual space in your kitchen, so choosing the right material matters. In Sri Lanka, you have two main options:
- Wooden Cabinets: These look warm and beautiful. Teak and mahogany are popular choices. Wooden cabinets last a long time if they are well-made and properly sealed. However, wood can be damaged by moisture and termites if not treated correctly. They cost more, but they give your kitchen a rich, high-quality look.
- Aluminium Cabinets: These are becoming very popular in Sri Lanka because they are water-resistant, termite-proof, and easy to clean. They cost less than wood and last very long. The look is more modern and simple. If your kitchen gets a lot of steam and moisture, aluminium is the safer choice.
For pantry cupboards, many families use a mix -- wooden upper cabinets for the look and aluminium lower cabinets near the sink area where water is common. This gives you the best of both worlds.
Granite Countertops vs Tile Countertops
The countertop is where you do most of your work, so it needs to be strong and easy to clean.
- Granite Countertops: Granite is the top choice for modern kitchens in Sri Lanka. It is heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and looks beautiful. You can place hot pots directly on it without damage. Granite comes in many colours -- black, grey, brown, and white are the most popular. It costs more upfront, but it lasts for decades with almost no maintenance.
- Tile Countertops: Tiles are the budget-friendly option. They look decent and come in many designs. However, the grout lines between tiles collect dirt and are hard to clean. Tiles can also crack if you drop something heavy on them. For a basic kitchen on a tight budget, tiles work fine. But if you can afford it, granite is always the better investment.
Kitchen Tile Backsplash Ideas
The backsplash is the wall area between your countertop and upper cabinets. It protects the wall from oil splashes, water, and stains. Here are some popular backsplash ideas for Sri Lankan kitchens:
- Ceramic tiles: The most common and affordable option. White or cream subway tiles give a clean, modern look.
- Patterned tiles: These add colour and personality to your kitchen. Blue and white patterns are very popular right now.
- Glass tiles: These are easy to clean and make the kitchen feel brighter. They cost a bit more but look very elegant.
- Full granite backsplash: If you have a granite countertop, you can extend the same granite up the wall. This gives a seamless, premium look.
Whatever you choose, make sure the backsplash covers at least 18 inches above the countertop. This protects the wall where most splashes happen.
Built-In Appliances for a Modern Kitchen
Built-in appliances make your kitchen look clean and organized. Instead of having items sitting on the countertop, they are fitted into the cabinets. The three most important built-in appliances are:
- Gas Hob (Cooktop): A built-in gas hob sits flush with the countertop. It is much easier to clean than a standing gas cooker. Choose a 3-burner or 4-burner hob depending on your cooking needs.
- Range Hood (Chimney): This is a must for Sri Lankan kitchens where we cook with a lot of oil and spices. A good range hood removes smoke, steam, and cooking smells. Mount it 24-30 inches above the hob for best results.
- Built-In Oven: If you bake or roast often, a built-in oven fitted into the cabinet at eye level is very convenient. It saves counter space and looks great.
Sink Placement and Plumbing
Where you place the sink matters more than most people think. Here are some practical tips:
- Place the sink near a window if possible. This gives you natural light and a view while washing dishes.
- Keep the sink close to the main water supply line. The shorter the plumbing run, the lower the cost and the less chance of leaks.
- A double-bowl sink is ideal for Sri Lankan cooking. You can wash vegetables in one bowl and soak dishes in the other.
- Make sure there is at least 2 feet of counter space on each side of the sink for keeping dishes and chopping boards.
- Plan the drain pipe route early. It is much harder and more expensive to change plumbing after the floor is tiled.
Ventilation and Lighting Tips
Sri Lankan cooking produces a lot of heat, smoke, and strong smells. Good ventilation is not optional -- it is essential.
- Always have at least one window in the kitchen for natural airflow. Two windows on different walls create cross ventilation, which is even better.
- Install a range hood or exhaust fan above the cooking area. This removes hot air and cooking smells quickly.
- For lighting, use bright white LED lights. A main ceiling light is not enough -- add under-cabinet LED strip lights above the countertop so you can see clearly while chopping and cooking.
- If the kitchen gets direct afternoon sun, use frosted glass or curtains to reduce heat while keeping the light.
Kitchen Size Recommendations for Sri Lankan Homes
Many people make the mistake of building the kitchen too small. Here are our recommendations based on experience:
- Small kitchen (minimum): 6x8 feet (48 sq ft) -- enough for a basic parallel or single-wall layout. Suitable for small houses or apartments.
- Medium kitchen (recommended): 8x10 feet (80 sq ft) -- this is the most comfortable size for a family of 4-5. Works well with an L-shaped layout.
- Large kitchen: 10x12 feet (120 sq ft) or bigger -- gives you room for a U-shaped layout, extra storage, and space for two people to cook at the same time.
If you are building a new house, we recommend at least 80 sq ft for the kitchen. It is very hard to add space later, so plan generously from the start.
Kitchen Budget Ranges in Sri Lanka
How much does a kitchen cost in Sri Lanka? Here is a rough guide based on a medium-sized kitchen (about 80 sq ft):
- Basic Kitchen (Rs. 3-5 Lakhs): Aluminium cabinets, tile countertop, basic tile backsplash, standard sink, no built-in appliances. Clean and functional.
- Mid-Range Kitchen (Rs. 5-10 Lakhs): Mix of wood and aluminium cabinets, granite countertop, ceramic tile backsplash, double-bowl sink, built-in gas hob and range hood. This is what most families go for.
- Luxury Kitchen (Rs. 10-20+ Lakhs): Full wooden or modular cabinets, premium granite or quartz countertop, designer backsplash, built-in hob, oven, range hood, under-cabinet lighting, and soft-close drawers. A kitchen that looks like a magazine photo.
These prices include cabinets, countertop, backsplash, sink, and basic appliances. Tiling, plumbing, and electrical work during house construction are usually part of the overall building cost.
Plan Your Kitchen Early
The biggest mistake people make is thinking about the kitchen design at the last minute. By then, the plumbing and electrical points are already fixed, and you have very few options left. Plan your kitchen layout, appliance positions, and electrical points at the house planning stage itself. This saves money and gives you the kitchen you actually want.
